The United States as a society has always prided itself on personal freedoms. One of these freedoms could be considered the "right to anonymity". This right protects people who have AIDS or other diseases. The new HIPPA protections also guarantee a certain right to anonymity. These right can be denied when society feels that harm can result from them. For example a convicted child abuser loses the right to anonymity in order to protect possible future victims.

I think that a lot of people confuse the "right to anonymity," for which we have no constitiutional right, with the "right to privacy."
In my experience, HIPPAA is a big deal. It is a firable offense for violating a patient's right to privacy. This protects EVERYONE, including people with AIDS. However, HIPPAA does not say anything about anonymity.
