I do not feel that immigrants who are not citizens and not applying for citizenship should be allowed to vote in state or local elections. People who are in this status are not invested enough to have the privialge to vote. Americans who travel to foreign countries and reside there and do not apply for citizenship are not allowed voting status in those countries. Should that not be the same here in the United States? Citizenship demands responsibility and commitment and therefore earns the priviage of voting. This has greater meaning to me in these times of terrorism and threats of terrorism. A commitment to the United States and to the laws of our land should be one of the pre-requisits for voting. Illegal immigrants are here illegally. They have already broken a law by being here. They drain our system of resources. In my opinion they need to go through the proper chanels in order to recieve the opportunity to vote.

Hi, Michelle,
I agree with you, as we both mentioned in class. In my reply, I did not even consider the terrorism, but someone who is a registered citizen and voter is much easier to keep track of in case of such scenarios.
I also agreed with the author of the essay we were commenting on, that in the long-term we benefit. However, in the short term, the taxpayers are saddled with the burden of caring for those who are not supporting themselves yet. I almost brought up that in my reading of the woes of Natividad hospital, I am finding that the uninsured or the indigent, which includes the illegal alien, gets free medical care at the hospital. And, the leadership of our county want us to pay more in taxes to support that.
Well, I do not qualify for any sort of housing assistance because I make too much money for that, but I don't make enough to afford a house on my own, so I am one who is "falling through the cracks." The idea of paying even more to help those who CAN get into a house when I cannot bugs me a little, not that I don't want to help, please understand. I just think there are other ways to do it.
Terrorism is a very immportant topic that alot of people tend to ignore. We also need to make sure that we do not sacrafice safety for information. Money and Profit blind many in the government seats, eliminating this will be the hardest job.
